A. The spring and fall usually offer cooler temperatures
and more moisture in the soil. The summer is a difficult
time for recently planted material, due to lack of
moisture and higher temperatures. Other then temperature,
it is important to know your type of soil. For soils
with mostly clay you must pay attention not to overwater,
as clay does not absorb water. Clay tends to drown
plants. Sandy, or gravel soils usually require more
watering. The easiest way to tell if you are over
or under watering is to place your hand in the soil
as far down as you can. If it feels dry, water more.
If you pull your hand up with wet mud, then chances
are that you are over watering.
General watering
guidlines are as follows:
For trees, place a hose by the trunk and let the water
trickle. Leave the hose on the tree for about 15 minutes.
Shrubs and perennials should be hand-watered in the
center of the plant for about two minutes each. A
wonderful tool that can help in watering is a "root
feeder." It is basically a thin stick, connected
to your garden hose and slid about a foot into the
ground to feed water directly to the plant's roots.
Q. Will weeds grow in brick patios?
A. Unfortunatly, yes they will. They will not grow
from below the patio, but from time-to-time, they
may grow in the space between bricks. Usually, pulling
them out by hand or using some weed killer will do
the trick.
Q. Will brick pavers move?
A. Some heaving is to be expected as the ground freezes
and thaws, but when the ground settles in the spring,
the pavers will tend to settle also. We install these
products based on the manufacuturer's recommendations
and are confident in the expected results.
Q. What is the best spray I can buy to keep
bugs from eating the leaves and flowers on my beautiful
plants?
A. The best remedy for keeping bugs from eating your
garden is a solution that can not be bought in stores.
However, it is very easy to make in your kitchen.
While garlic and pepper are popular seasonings for
human food, insects find them distasteful. They can
be used to make a spray that can be applied as often
as needed to repel pests. Always handle hot stuff
with caution. And never use it to repel animals.
Q. How long should I leave on the supportive
stakes on my trees?
A. We recommend leaving the stakes on one to two years,
or until you can see some significant growth.
